Investigation of Low Discharge Voltage Hall Thruster Operating Modes and Ionization Processes

چکیده
A study of low discharge voltage Hall thruster operation revealed the existence of two operating regimes. Small variations in cathode flow fraction and magnetic field resulted in sharp changes in discharge current with constant thrust, corresponding to a visible change in the jet-mode plume structure. The phenomenon is characterized with a systematic map of thruster operation for discharge voltages ranging from 100 120 V, anode flow rates from 10 – 20 mg/s, and cathode flow rates from 7% to 25% of the anode flow. Far-field plume measurements show electron current to the anode is decreased during this transition. The ion energy distributions exhibit significant differences between the highcurrent and low-current operating modes. These differences are indicative of a significant increase in the fraction of low-energy multiply charged ions and a longer region of primary ion acceleration in the high-current mode. Parametric Investigation of the Rotating Spoke Instability in Hall Thrusters
This work presents recent results of ongoing investigations into rotating spoke instabilities in Hall thrusters. Recent work by the authors demonstrated large amounts of electron current carried by spokes in the nearanode region in the H6 6-kW laboratory model Hall thruster, and raises the question of whether spokes may play a larger role in electron transport throughout the Hall thruster plume...
متن کاملHybrid-PIC Modeling of the Transport of Atomic Boron in a Hall Thruster
Computational analysis of the transport of boron eroded from the walls of a Hall thruster is performed by implementing sputter yields of hexagonal boron nitride and velocity distribution functions of boron within the hybrid-PIC model HPHall. The model is applied to simulate NASA’s HiVHAc Hall thruster at a discharge voltage of 500V and discharge powers of 1–3 kW. The number densities of grounda...
متن کاملMode Transitions in Hall-Effect Thrusters Induced by Variable Magnetic Field Strength
Mode transitions in a 6 kW laboratory Hall-effect thruster were induced by varying the magnetic field intensity while holding all other operating parameters constant. Ultrafast imaging, discharge current, and thrust measurements were used to characterize the change in discharge channel current density and thruster performance through mode transitions. The modes are described here as global osci...
متن کاملFar-Field Plume Measurements of a Nested-Channel Hall-Effect Thruster
Far-field plume measurements were performed on the X2 nested-channel Hall-effect thruster using a nude Faraday probe, retarding potential analyzer, and E×B probe. Data from these probes were used to examine the operating characteristics of the X2 with both channels operating simultaneously (dual-channel mode). For each operating condition in dual-channel mode, far-field measurements were also t...
متن کاملConstant-Power Performance and Plume Measurements of a Nested-Channel Hall-Effect Thruster
The X2 nested-channel Hall-effect thruster has been operated at constant discharge powers of 5 kW and 6 kW. Thrust measurements showed that improved performance over an extended range of specific impulse can be obtained by transitions between operating modes of the X2. The simultaneous operation of both channels provided the best performance at low specific impulse, where higher mass flow rates...
